Derby County was very active during the summer transfer window, and one signing is proving to be crucial for Paul Warne despite facing some recent criticism.

The Rams have achieved three victories in their first seven Championship matches, with their latest defeat coming against Norwich City in controversial circumstances. Derby felt they were robbed of at least a point, or perhaps even all three, as the ball appeared to go out of play during the buildup to Carlos Sainz’s first goal, a similar incident occurred during his hat-trick clincher.

Paul Warne had valid reasons to be upset about the decisions that went against his team, but the hosts still put up a spirited effort, managing to score twice. Craig Forsyth and Corey Blackett-Taylor both found the net for the first time this season, yet one new signing is still awaiting his first goal.

Richie Barker believes that Jerry Yates is invaluable to Derby County. The Rams secured striker Jerry Yates on loan from Swansea City to strengthen their attacking options with Championship experience.

Although Yates missed the first two games of the season due to suspension, the 27-year-old has started the last five matches without scoring. Some Derby fans have grown impatient with his lack of goals, while others have acknowledged his contributions off the ball, a sentiment shared by assistant manager Richie Barker.

Barker believes that although Yates hasn’t yet scored to reflect his significant contributions off the ball, he has played a crucial role in Derby’s victories over Middlesbrough, Bristol City, and Cardiff City.

Referring to Yates as an “unselfish striker,” Barker commented on the Rams’ official website: “Jerry is more valuable than just his statistics; he was outstanding in the match against Bristol City a few weeks ago. While he may have struggled with a few aspects in the recent game against Norwich, he plays a vital role in our tactics.

“He’s a very selfless striker, and we’ve known him for a long time. If you told him that we would have a successful season without him scoring, he would accept that because that’s the type of person he is and reflects the team spirit we aim for.

“When he finally scores, it will be a well-received goal because he’s a beloved member of the team, and the players appreciate his efforts. It’s not solely about him or his goal tally. I believe it’s beneficial when we have multiple goalscorers, as it makes us more challenging to defend against.”

Derby County has proven they can score from various sources.

While strikers are primarily evaluated by their goal count, Yates’ performances in his first five games for Derby suggest this perception needs to shift.

The former Blackpool player has exerted himself for the team, using his work ethic and speed to stretch defenses and create opportunities for his teammates.

Derby hasn’t felt the absence of Yates’ goals, as they have scored 10 times in seven matches with eight different players finding the net.

Three defenders—Curtis Nelson, Forsyth, and Kane Wilson—have also scored this season, while the only forward to find the back of the net in the league is Kayden Jackson, who has scored twice.

If Warne’s squad can carry their scoring ability at home into their away matches, the Rams will pose a significant threat to opposing defenses.
