While veterans like Max Pacioretty and Nick Robertson are fighting to stay on the roster, there’s a new wave of young talent aiming to step up to the next level. Prospects such as Easton Cowan are determined to break into the lineup, and despite Fraser Minten being sidelined with a high-ankle sprain, he was expected to compete for a spot after impressing last season.

Here are three young Maple Leafs prospects to keep an eye on during training camp and the preseason:

 1. Topi Niemelä
Topi Niemelä has been one of the most frequently mentioned prospects, and for good reason. After a stellar rookie campaign with the Toronto Marlies, where he tallied 39 points in 68 games, Niemelä has shown potential for a breakout performance. His transition from European to North American ice was smooth, and he continually improved as the season progressed.

Niemelä’s performance during the recent prospect showcase solidified his case for more attention. His mobility, offensive awareness, and swift puck movement stood out. Niemelä’s ability to control the play, whether breaking out of his zone or setting up plays at the blue line, made him a key difference-maker. His five assists in two games at the showcase highlighted his playmaking prowess. With added poise, confidence, and strength, Niemelä could push for a roster spot despite Toronto’s crowded defense.

 2. Cade Webber
Acquired from the Carolina Hurricanes at last season’s trade deadline, Cade Webber is the type of shutdown defenseman the Maple Leafs have lacked. Known for his steady defensive presence, Webber’s standout performance during the prospect showdown showcased his exceptional defensive instincts, positioning, and ability to close gaps quickly.

Webber’s size and foot speed make him a reliable presence in his own zone, constantly pressuring opponents and breaking up plays. While primarily a defensive defenseman, Webber didn’t shy away from joining the rush and contributing offensively when opportunities arose. If he can add more offensive elements to his game, Webber could evolve into more than just a shutdown player. Although further down the depth chart, Webber’s preseason play could help him move closer to an NHL opportunity.

 3. Nikita Grebenkin
Nikita Grebenkin only played one game during the prospect showdown, but he made an immediate impression. Starting camp on a line with veterans Max Pacioretty and Pontus Holmberg, Grebenkin already has a wealth of experience, having played in the KHL and won the Gagarin Cup last season.

As a playmaking winger, Grebenkin thrives in tough areas of the ice, using his size and puck-handling skills to create scoring opportunities. His ability to battle for puck possession, combined with his speed and work ethic, makes him a constant offensive threat. Grebenkin’s pro experience and physical style could give him an edge in earning a spot on the Leafs’ roster. His fit with the team’s desired direction could see him make the jump to the NHL sooner rather than later.

Topi Niemelä, Cade Webber, and Nikita Grebenkin have each shown flashes of brilliance during the prospect showdown and could be poised to earn more than just minor league minutes.
