Maple Leafs star $16 million defenseman confirms extenstion talks underway

Jake McCabe is eager to sign a long-term extension with the Toronto Maple Leafs as discussions have already begun. The defenseman is entering the final year of his four-year, $16 million deal and is hopeful to remain with the team for the long term.

“We’ve had a few conversations. I love it here, and I think they appreciate my game too,” McCabe said. “That’s why I have an agent, but now it’s training camp, and I’m just excited to be with the guys and focus on our game… We’ll see how things progress.”

Since being traded from the Chicago Blackhawks on February 27, McCabe has become an essential part of the Maple Leafs’ blue line. Last season, the 30-year-old played 73 games, recording 8 goals and 20 assists.

NHL insider Elliotte Friedman confirmed that there’s mutual interest between McCabe and the Maple Leafs regarding an extension. McCabe’s role on the team primarily includes playing as a defensive defenseman, with the potential to move up to the second pairing in crucial moments.

As McCabe approaches his 12th NHL season, he’s focused on improving his game and leadership. “My goal is always to get better. My body feels great, and I want to step up as a leader and help push the team forward,” McCabe said.

Teammate Simon Benoit praised McCabe’s influence, noting how calm and reliable he is on the ice while playing a physical, old-school style that the team values. The Maple Leafs will start their 2024-25 season on October 9 against the Montreal Canadiens.
