According to a report by TSN’s hockey insider Chris Johnston, after signing James van Riemsdyk, the Columbus Blue Jackets are still seeking another NHL-ready forward. The team faces a significant gap to fill both on and off the ice following the tragic loss of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau.
Bringing in a veteran like van Riemsdyk was a smart move by Blue Jackets GM Don Waddell, but the search for another forward continues. One potential source for a trade could be the Toronto Maple Leafs, who have a surplus of forwards after signing Max Pacioretty and Steven Lorentz to PTOs and inking Nicholas Robertson to a one-year deal. With prospects like Easton Cowan and Fraser Minten pushing for spots, the Leafs are dealing with a forward logjam and salary cap limitations. This could lead to players like Calle Jarnkrok or David Kampf, who both have higher cap hits but are productive bottom-six forwards, becoming trade candidates. However, both Kampf and Jarnkrok have modified no-trade clauses that could complicate a deal.
The Leafs may need to offload one of these forwards to clear cap space, and the Blue Jackets could be the team to take advantage of the situation. Potential trades could involve the Leafs trading either Kampf or Jarnkrok for a 2025 fourth-round pick, or perhaps both players for two picks in 2025 and 2026. These trades would benefit both teams, with the Leafs clearing needed cap space and the Blue Jackets adding valuable forward depth.
