Oscar Klefbom, a long-time defenseman for the Edmonton Oilers, has officially announced his retirement from the NHL, ending a career that was marred by a chronic shoulder injury. Klefbom, 30, last played in the 2019-2020 season and had been battling persistent health issues that ultimately led to his decision to retire.

Drafted 19th overall by the Oilers in 2011, Klefbom quickly became a cornerstone of the team’s defense. Known for his poise, puck-handling, and ability to log big minutes, Klefbom played 378 regular-season games over eight seasons with the Oilers, tallying 34 goals and 122 assists for 156 points.

Despite his success on the ice, injuries began to take their toll. Klefbom missed the entire 2020-2021 season due to his shoulder condition, which required multiple surgeries and extensive rehabilitation. In recent years, speculation had grown about his future, but the official announcement of his retirement now closes the chapter on a promising career that was unfortunately cut short.

Klefbom’s departure leaves a significant void in the Oilers’ defensive lineup, but his contributions to the team and the game will be remembered by fans and teammates alike. The Oilers and the hockey community have expressed their appreciation for Klefbom’s dedication and resilience, wishing him well in his post-hockey life.
