Reporter Darren Witcoop has disclosed on X that Derby County is considering signing a seasoned goalkeeper. With their Championship campaign set to start in just a few days, the Rams are preparing to return to the second tier after a two-year absence. They narrowly missed out on the play-offs during the 2022/23 League One season and secured second place behind Portsmouth last season.
Under the guidance of Paul Warne and with improved financial stability, Derby County is focused on securing their Championship status. While they have made some new signings, additional reinforcements are necessary to enhance their chances of avoiding relegation back to League One.
Currently, the club’s priority is acquiring a new goalkeeper, as Josh Vickers is the only senior option available amid ongoing negotiations for Swedish player Jacob Widell Zitterstrom. However, it has come to light that Derby County is also targeting a more experienced goalkeeper. Witcoop’s update suggests that this potential signing could soon be made, though the identity of the player remains undisclosed.
The experienced goalkeeper would provide competition for Vickers as the club awaits resolution in the Zitterstrom pursuit. Vickers is expected to start the season due to the tight timeframe before their opener against Blackburn Rovers on Friday night.
Aside from the goalkeeping situation, Derby County is also evaluating their other squad needs. While the midfield, wide areas, and forward positions are well-stocked, adding depth to the centre-back positions could be beneficial, particularly since a back three is commonly used. Additionally, a versatile, attack-minded player could offer extra flexibility for Warne’s tactics.
