I’ve extensively discussed Michael Hawkins Jr.’s potential, even likening him to Kyler Murray. That’s how highly I regard him. Hawkins arrived in Norman after a stellar high school career in Texas, ranking as the nation’s number three dual-threat quarterback.

Currently, he’s vying for the backup quarterback spot against Oklahoma native and seasoned player Casey Thompson. The experience Hawkins will gain each week from preparing, observing Arnold’s play, and learning from Thompson will be invaluable for the freshman. I eagerly anticipate seeing him in some cleanup action this season so Sooner Nation can witness his skills.

Hawkins exudes a unique vibe, carrying himself with quiet confidence and a calm demeanor. However, on the practice field, he stands out. Every message board and podcast about Sooner football practices is filled with praise for Hawkins’ athleticism and arm talent. Although he’s currently second or third behind starter and 5-star Jackson Arnold, Hawkins is perfectly positioned for now.

Our only official glimpse of Hawkins was during the spring game, where he went 5-12 for 42 yards, had three impressive scrambles, and showed confidence on the field. I don’t focus too much on spring game stats; I’m more interested in how players look. Hawkins appeared calm, methodical, and very athletic. He also won the Oklahoma football spring superlative for the most improved offensive player.

Aside from Michael Hawkins Sr., no one in Sooner Nation is as excited as I am for Hawkins Jr.’s debut. However, we have to wait, and so does Michael. This season allows him to ease into big-time college football, a transition that is challenging, especially at the Division One level. While I’m confident he could make an impact this year, there’s no need to rush him. I’m comfortable with him backing up Arnold and eagerly await the ‘Kyler-like’ impact he’ll have on the program in the future.
