The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed defenseman Dakota Mermis to a one-year contract with an annual cap hit of $775,000 for the upcoming season.

The six-foot, left-handed defenseman spent the past four seasons with the Minnesota Wild, primarily playing for their AHL affiliate in Iowa, but he also appeared in 47 NHL games during the 2023-2024 campaign.

The 30-year-old Alton, IL native initially signed with the Arizona Coyotes as a free agent in 2015, playing 251 games and tallying 68 points with their farm system. He briefly joined the New Jersey Devils in the 2019-2020 season before moving to the Wild.

Before his professional career, Mermis played four seasons in the OHL. After three years with the London Knights, he finished with the Oshawa Generals, winning the Memorial Cup in 2015.
