Paul Warne’s success in transforming Nathaniel Mendez-Laing into a dynamic attacking force at Derby County suggests he could achieve similar results with another talented player.

This summer, Derby have strengthened their squad with six new additions, focusing mainly on midfield and attack. Kenzo Goudmijn, Ebou Adams, David Ozoh, and Ben Osborn have been brought in as midfield options, while Kayden Jackson and Jerry Yates have been signed to boost the attack.

Despite these additions, there are ongoing concerns about the team’s ability to score goals. It has even been suggested that acquiring a striker or additional attackers could make a significant difference. Warne is set to prioritize addressing this issue in the coming weeks, potentially by exploring the loan market.

One player Derby County might consider is Malcolm Ebiowei, whom Oxford United is reportedly interested in. The Championship newcomers are looking to bring the 20-year-old winger on loan from Crystal Palace to enhance their attacking options. Derby could potentially hijack this move to secure Ebiowei’s services.

Derby County fans will remember Ebiowei from his time with the Rams in 2021, where he made 16 Championship appearances in the 2021/22 season, scoring once before moving to Crystal Palace on a free transfer.

Since joining Selhurst Park, the pacey winger has struggled to secure a regular spot in the first team and has had underwhelming loan spells at Hull City (2022/23) and RWD Molenbeek (2023/24). In total, he managed just one assist in 17 appearances across both teams, showing difficulty in finding his rhythm.

Former Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson had praised Ebiowei as ‘outstanding’ in January, highlighting his talent. Given this potential, he might be better off rejecting Oxford and returning to Derby.

Paul Warne, who successfully revitalized Nathaniel Mendez-Laing’s career, could work similar magic with Ebiowei. Mendez-Laing, signed on a free transfer in July 2022 after a challenging period at Sheffield Wednesday, enjoyed a remarkable turnaround under Warne’s guidance. In his first season with Derby, Mendez-Laing contributed seven goals and eight assists. His second season saw him achieve nine goals and 16 assists, helping Derby secure a second-place finish in League One.

Warne’s ability to enhance players’ performance makes him well-suited to bring out the best in Ebiowei, just as he did with Mendez-Laing.
