Gonçalo Borges is now being rumored as a potential new signing for Rangers.

The 23-year-old FC Porto winger is among the latest attacking players linked with the Ibrox club as Philippe Clement aims to bolster his squad.

With the Scottish Premiership season and Champions League qualifiers approaching, concerns have arisen among fans following reports that Rangers’ initial bid for Borges was rejected. However, Fabrizio Romano has reported that, according to French sources, Borges is nearing an €8m (£6.7m) move away from Porto.

Borges ‘close’ to Porto exit

Portuguese publication Record reports that Rangers had a €6m (£5m) bid for Gonçalo Borges rejected by Porto over the weekend. The winger, who played 28 times for Porto last season without scoring, is now drawing interest from Ligue 1 club Strasbourg.

Strasbourg has reportedly edged ahead of Rangers in the race for Borges, with an initial €8m (£6.7m) agreement close to being finalized, excluding any potential add-ons. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has hinted on X that a move to Strasbourg is nearing completion.

If these reports prove accurate and Borges heads to Strasbourg, it will mark another setback for Rangers, who have already seen several high-profile transfer pursuits fall through this summer, including the failed deal for Joan Jordan.

The Rangers recruitment team is facing increased scrutiny as many believe the squad has regressed from last season. The departure of Abdallah Sima has particularly impacted the team’s attacking options. Although Rangers are still interested in Sima, a deal currently seems financially unfeasible.

To address the gap, Rangers have secured Czech international Vaclav Cerny from Wolfsburg and are also interested in Plymouth winger Morgan Whittaker. It remains uncertain if the pursuit of Borges will affect their interest in these players.
