With the Champions League deadline approaching, all eyes are on which new signings Rangers might secure before August 1st. They need to register any new arrivals before this date, especially with a QR3 tie against Dynamo Kiev likely on the horizon.

The Scottish Premiership begins with a match against Hearts this Saturday, making it seem unlikely that any new arrivals could make an impact on the trip to Tynecastle in time.

As pre-season winds down, leading Rangers fan media outlet Heart & Hand has released a new Transfer Show. They report that Rangers are targeting three new signings, including two centre-backs.

Whittaker a ‘Legitimate’ Target

One player frequently linked with Rangers over the past 18 months is Plymouth attacker Morgan Whittaker. The former Swansea City star was the subject of a bid from Rangers previously, and a £7 million offer for him was recently rejected.

Plymouth’s manager Wayne Rooney has indicated that only a substantial offer would tempt them, but Heart & Hand believes Rangers’ interest is genuine. “We’re continuing to be linked with Morgan Whittaker,” said Transfer Show host Simon Halloran. “We wouldn’t be pursuing him if we didn’t believe a deal could be done.”

Halloran added, “There is legitimate interest, and it’s one to watch in the coming weeks.”

Rangers Linked to Centre-Backs

Rangers fans feel the need for reinforcements at centre-back after a poor defensive showing last season and pre-season. With vice-captain Connor Goldson moving to Cypriot club Aris, there are concerns about the defensive line.

Heart & Hand reports that Rangers are interested in FC Twente centre-back Mees Hilgers. Despite earlier claims that a Rangers bid was incorrect, Hilgers remains a target. “He’s a 23-year-old who has played around 20 games a season,” said Halloran. “He looks promising but might be a bit young.”

Rangers are also said to be considering Scotland international Scott McKenna, who was offered to them following his release from Nottingham Forest. Currently training with Aberdeen, McKenna is reportedly one of the few players in Scotland whose wages Rangers could afford.

Halloran commented, “Scott McKenna has been offered to the club. He’s training with Aberdeen now, and only a couple of clubs here could match his wages. We’ll see if that move materializes.”
