Collingwood icon Scott Pendlebury has confirmed he’ll be staying with the Magpies for the 2025 season, just a week after coach Craig McRae hinted at tough decisions regarding the veterans’ futures. The Magpies boosted their finals hopes with a crucial win over last-placed Richmond.

McRae had previously stated that he was in ongoing discussions with the veteran players, indicating that significant decisions could be made if Collingwood missed out on finals action in 2024. Despite these uncertainties, Pendlebury’s announcement of a new contract adds optimism to the club’s future.

Looking ahead, Collingwood will begin the next season with 11 players aged over 30. Following a potentially disappointing season, there may be questions about the future of seasoned stars like Pendlebury, who will turn 37 in January, and Sidebottom, who will be 34.

Pendlebury, who is set to play his 400th VFL/AFL game this Saturday against Carlton, also has the chance to surpass Brent Harvey as the most capped player in history if he continues beyond next year. He has hinted at future plans but stressed that his focus remains on contributing to the team rather than personal milestones.

McRae, meanwhile, has been keeping his cards close to his chest regarding the club’s strategy. Last week, he mentioned he was regularly in touch with Pendlebury and other senior players about both immediate and future concerns, acknowledging their significant contributions to the club.
