Newly appointed Hibernian manager David Gray is looking to Martin Boyle to take on a leadership role both on and off the pitch in the upcoming season. Boyle was given the captain’s armband in Hibs’ 1-0 victory over MSV Duisburg, with Joe Newell assuming the role after a complete halftime lineup change.

Gray praised Boyle’s performance, noting, “He had a little bit of extra responsibility today, as well, in leading the team out. That was great to see from him – and I think he responded well to that.” Gray emphasized his belief in Boyle’s potential as a senior figure, citing his long tenure and significant contributions to the club.

In the match, Gray also debuted central defenders Warren O’Hora and Marvin Ekpiteta, who showed promise alongside new goalkeeper Josef Bursik. The defensive lineup, which has been a concern for Hibs, left Gray feeling encouraged after a solid performance.

“Marvin and Warren had never played together before,” Gray noted. “In the second half as well, Rocky and Riley hadn’t played together for a wee while, so there were things to work on with the boys.”

Gray was particularly pleased with Bursik’s vocal presence and communication skills, which he believes are crucial for defensive cohesion. “Josef has really hit the ground running with the lads, he’s a confident boy, really good with the players – and I’m delighted with how that started.”

Gray also highlighted the importance of the team’s intensity and effort, which were rewarded with a clean sheet and victory. “We got another good 45 minutes into the legs, which is good. After another tough few days, that’s really pleasing.”

The manager’s focus on teamwork and defensive solidity seems to be paying off, and with Boyle stepping up as a leader, Gray is optimistic about the season ahead.
