The Texas Rangers and Toronto Blue Jays have completed a trade, with right-hander Yerry Rodriguez moving to Toronto in exchange for minor league righty Josh Mollerus, as confirmed by both clubs. Rodriguez, who was recently designated for assignment by Texas, ends his ten-year tenure with the Rangers organization. Originally signed from the Dominican Republic in September 2015, Rodriguez debuted in MLB in 2022 and has compiled a 7.11 ERA over 31 2/3 innings across three seasons with the Rangers. This year, he has struggled with a 6.88 ERA in 17 innings, allowing five home runs while recording 11 walks and 12 strikeouts.

Once known for his control, Rodriguez’s walk rates have become a concern, particularly in Triple-A where he holds a 5.42 ERA over 151 innings, with a 15.2% walk rate this season in Round Rock. Despite these challenges, Rodriguez maintains a strong strikeout rate of 28.16% in Triple-A. Toronto scouts are optimistic about his potential, believing they can help refine his command issues.

The trade addresses Toronto’s bullpen needs, providing them with a reliever who can move between Triple-A Buffalo and the majors as needed. Rodriguez, who started his career as a starter but has shifted to relief, offers versatility as a multi-inning pitcher.

In return, the Rangers acquire Josh Mollerus, a University of Oregon product drafted in the 10th round by Toronto last year. Mollerus has shown promise early in his career with a high strikeout rate of 32.26% and a walk rate of 15.05% over 42 1/3 professional innings. After starting at A-level Dunedin last season, he progressed to high-A Vancouver in 2024.
