Sheffield Wednesday have been fined £12,500 following an incident where a fan made a racist gesture towards Coventry City midfielder Kasey Palmer during a Championship game on 20 January. The supporter involved has been banned for life by the club.

In May, Edward Rabjohn pleaded guilty to racially abusing Palmer at Sheffield Magistrates Court and received a five-year ban from attending football matches. According to a report by the Football Association, video evidence clearly captured the spectator making a monkey gesture.

In response to the incident, Sheffield Wednesday has been instructed by the Football Association to implement an action plan addressing misconduct related to crowd control.

In a statement, Sheffield Wednesday expressed their commitment to addressing the issue seriously: “Following a thorough investigation, the individual responsible was identified and subsequently brought to justice. In addition to the legal consequences, this person has been permanently banned from all Sheffield Wednesday fixtures and club events. They will have the opportunity to attend a rehabilitation program after 10 years, aligning with the EDI Code of Practice for EFL clubs.”

The club reiterated their stance against such behavior, emphasizing their ongoing responsibility to ensure that supporters uphold appropriate conduct at all times, both at home and away matches, reflecting their status as a community-focused and family-oriented football club.
