Breaking News: Mitch Marner Set to Ink Blockbuster $128 Million Contract!

Mitch Marner Set for Free Agency, Predicted to Land Massive Deal

Toronto Maple Leafs star forward Mitch Marner is approaching free agency on July 1, and one analyst believes he’ll secure a major contract.

Marner is expected to be a top target and in line for a significant extension. Maple Leafs analyst Steve Dangle of SDPN predicts he will remain in Toronto but sign a lucrative new deal.

“He wants to stay. If that’s the case, there’s an incentive to sign for eight years… I start at Leon’s number ($14 million per season)… He’s going to sign an eight-year, $16 million per season contract,” Dangle stated.

A contract of $16 million per season over eight years would total $128 million, making it a massive deal. However, with the NHL salary cap set to rise significantly, the contract could become more manageable.

The current salary cap is $88 million but will increase to $95.5 million in 2025-26, $104 million in 2026-27, and $113.5 million in 2027-28. This puts Marner in a strong position to secure a massive deal, which Dangle expects will come from the Maple Leafs.

Marner has played 51 games this season, tallying 15 goals and 53 assists for 68 points. He is also a three-time NHL All-Star.

Analyst Says Marner Must Deliver in Playoffs

If the Leafs plan to extend Marner with such a large contract, Dangle believes he must step up in the postseason.

A common criticism of Marner is that he struggles in crucial playoff games. If he expects a massive deal, he’ll need to prove he can deliver when it matters most.

“He needs to be one of the top reasons why this team finds playoff success,” Dangle said. “Score some key goals, put up points, and avoid costly mistakes. What’s being asked of him isn’t complicated, but it’s also not easy—that’s why the big money is there.”

Throughout his playoff career, Marner has played 57 games, recording 11 goals and 39 assists for 50 points.

Insider: Marner Wants to Stay in Toronto

Despite speculation, Marner has expressed his desire to remain with the Maple Leafs.

A Toronto native, Marner made it clear after last year’s playoff exit that his goal is to stay with the team. TSN NHL insider Darren Dreger also reported that Marner is committed to remaining a Leaf.

“I believe Toronto really wants to sign Marner, and all signs point to him wanting to stay long-term,” Dreger said on TSN’s First Up on January 27. “The business side makes things complicated, but if Marner wanted to start negotiations today, the Leafs would be ready to get a deal done immediately.”

Originally selected fourth overall in the 2015 NHL Draft, Marner has been a key piece of the Maple Leafs’ core for nearly a decade.
