Dan Campbell delivered a powerful speech on Tuesday that both Detroit Lions fans and players likely needed after the team’s recent loss to the Buffalo Bills.

The Bills ended the Lions’ 11-game win streak with a 48-42 victory on Sunday, though the game wasn’t as close as the score suggests. The Lions fought back from a 21-point deficit late in the third quarter but fell short of completing the comeback in front of a packed crowd at Ford Field in Detroit.

On Tuesday, Campbell appeared on 97.1 The Ticket radio to reflect on the loss. The Lions’ head coach shared a memorable analogy to explain why the team needed a defeat like the one against the Bills (with profanity edited by LBS).

“What happens is, you get used to eating filet, and I’m talking all of us,” Campbell said. “Everything’s good. Life’s good. But you forget what it was like when you had nothing and ate your f—ing molded bread. It was just fine and gave you everything you needed. Sometimes, you’ve got to get punched in the mouth and remember what it used to be like to really appreciate where you are.”

“We’ve got a bad taste in our mouths. We got kicked around the other day. We lost a few guys. And you know what, it’s exactly what we needed. This is exactly what we needed.”

While Campbell was clearly exaggerating when he said Sunday’s result was “exactly what we needed,” the Lions did lose several key players to injuries and are now more shorthanded than ever with just a few weeks left before the playoffs. Still, Campbell knows feeling sorry for themselves won’t help.

The Lions have been in worse situations in the past. Prior to last season’s NFC Championship Game appearance, Detroit hadn’t made it past the Wild Card round in over 30 years.

Campbell doesn’t want one tough loss and a few injuries to derail the team’s goals for this season. And with one of the Lions’ injured stars hoping to make a surprise Super Bowl return, Detroit has plenty of motivation to push even further this postseason.
