The Detroit Lions have faced a string of fines this season, from touchdown celebrations to helmet-to-helmet hits, drawing attention for their actions on the field. Many of these fines have been a result of the league’s rules and the players’ actions, and the absence of fines in Week 13 was notable.

However, the break was short-lived. As usual, the league announced its fines on Saturday following Week 14’s games. Although it feels like the Lions’ game against the Green Bay Packers happened a while ago, the NFL’s review process remains timely.

Early in the Thursday night game against the Packers, Lions defensive end Za’Darius Smith made contact with quarterback Jordan Love’s head and neck area. Although a flag for roughing the passer should have been thrown, it was missed by the officials, despite being a clear violation. This highlights the need for replay review to correct such blatant mistakes. As expected, Smith was fined $6,722 for the high hit on Love.

Additionally, Lions rookie guard Christian Mahogany was also fined $4,609 for a facemask penalty during the same game. The infraction occurred when Mahogany, on his third career snap, grabbed the facemask of Packers linebacker Quay Walker while run-blocking. Although no penalty was called during the game, the league issued the fine after reviewing the play.

Mahogany’s facemask penalty came during a brief stint in the game when Kevin Zeitler temporarily left due to injury. It was an unfortunate mistake during his third and final snap of the game.
