The Toronto Blue Jays may be experiencing one of the toughest offseasons in the league. Not only have they missed out on top free agents like Juan Soto, Garrett Crochet, and Max Fried, but they’ve also watched the value of their star, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., soar. With Soto securing a $765 million deal this winter, Guerrero’s potential value could exceed $500 million by the time he becomes a free agent in 2025. Spotrac estimates that Guerrero could sign a massive 12-year, $462 million contract next offseason. FanSided’s Zachary Rotman believes that 2025 will likely be Guerrero’s final year in Toronto and predicts that the two sides will part ways by the following offseason at the latest.
“Despite the Blue Jays’ disappointing season, Guerrero was a bright spot,” Rotman wrote. “He played at an MVP-caliber level, significantly increasing his value in the process. With the 25-year-old entering his final year under club control, Blue Jays fans can only wonder how much his market price has surged following Soto’s deal.”
Rotman also pointed out that while an extension is the ideal scenario for the Blue Jays, Guerrero may be reluctant to sign one after witnessing the bidding war for Soto. If Guerrero enters free agency, the chances of him staying with Toronto would diminish dramatically. With the odds stacked against them, the Blue Jays could look into trading Guerrero, especially if they fall out of contention by next season’s trade deadline. While a trade is not the most probable outcome, it remains a possibility if the team’s situation deteriorates.
