The Blue Jays began reshaping their bullpen yesterday by signing former pitcher Yimi Garcia to a two-year, $15 million deal, just months after trading him to the Seattle Mariners at last season’s trade deadline.
Now, the Blue Jays are looking to add former Yankees pitcher Jonathan Loaisiga as they continue to rebuild their bullpen for the 2025 season. Following a disastrous 2024 campaign, the team is in urgent need of reliable bullpen arms, especially since most of their relief pitchers were recently released.
According to a report from TSN’s Scott Mitchell, the Blue Jays are eyeing Loaisiga as part of their bullpen overhaul.
However, signing Loaisiga comes with risks. The 30-year-old missed most of the 2024 season after tearing his UCL in April, which limited him to just 4 innings of play. Despite a history of injuries, Loaisiga had strong seasons for the Yankees, including a standout 2021 campaign with a 2.17 ERA, a 9-4 record, and 5 saves in 70.2 innings.
Injury concerns persist, as Loaisiga also only pitched 17 innings in 2023 due to right elbow inflammation. If the Blue Jays can sign him at a low cost, it may be worth the gamble, as Loaisiga has shown he can be a top-tier relief pitcher when healthy.
