The Toronto Maple Leafs are actively exploring options to bolster their center depth ahead of the trade deadline, according to NHL insider David Pagnotta. Speaking on “The Latest” Tuesday, Pagnotta emphasized that the team is “poking around the center market,” especially looking for a second-line center. However, recent performances by prospect Fraser Minten, who has stepped up during a string of injuries, might alter the team’s strategy. If Minten continues his strong play, it could reduce the need for a bottom-six center addition.
Pagnotta also suggested that Minten’s emergence could allow the Leafs to target a higher-end second-line center instead of a top-line talent. The Leafs’ lack of a 2024 first-round pick, however, could complicate any trade talks. “A second-line center is what they would ideally want to add, but they might not have the assets to make it happen,” Pagnotta explained, noting that they only have a 2025 first-round pick to work with.
With several key players, including Auston Matthews, Max Pacioretty, and Calle Jarnkrok, currently sidelined, the Leafs are looking to strengthen their roster as they aim for a deep playoff run. The success of their trade pursuit will depend on their target options and what they’re willing to give up in return.
