DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Lions are getting crucial help at linebacker with the addition of Kwon Alexander, who agreed to sign off the Denver Broncos’ practice squad on Friday.

The 30-year-old inside linebacker, who started two games and played in another as a reserve for the Broncos this season, will provide much-needed depth to the Lions’ linebacker unit, which has been hit hard by injuries.

Malcolm Rodriguez suffered a knee injury in Thursday’s win over Chicago, and coach Dan Campbell expressed concern that it could be serious. Rodriguez had been filling in for Alex Anzalone, who is on injured reserve with a broken arm and is expected to be sidelined for at least another month. Additionally, veteran linebackers Derrick Barnes and Jalen Reeves-Maybin are also injured, further depleting the position.

The NFC-leading Lions (11-1) will face Green Bay (9-3) on Thursday night, and they may need Alexander to step in and make an impact against the Packers.

The defensive line has also been struggling with injuries. Defensive linemen Josh Paschal (knee), Levi Onwuzurike (hamstring), and Mekhi Wingo (knee) were hurt in the game against Chicago, and the unit has already lost Aidan Hutchinson to a broken leg, along with Marcus Davenport, John Cominsky, and Kyle Peko due to injuries.

Campbell has remained resolute, saying, “Whoever we have available, we’re going to get them ready to play. You’ve got to do your job, and everybody around you is looking for you to do your job.”

As the Lions prepare for their pivotal matchup against the Packers, they may look to add more defensive linemen to provide depth for their depleted front. With injuries mounting, Detroit is exploring options to strengthen both their linebacker and defensive line corps before the next crucial game.
