Blue Jays Rumored to Target Luis Severino to Bolster Rotation
After a disappointing 2024 season, the Toronto Blue Jays are reportedly setting their sights on free agent pitcher Luis Severino, formerly of the New York Mets and Yankees.
Following back-to-back postseason appearances in 2022 and 2023, the Blue Jays struggled this year, finishing last in the AL East with a 74-88 record. This underwhelming performance has fueled speculation that Toronto is determined to make major upgrades to the roster during the offseason.
Luis Severino’s 2024 stats:
- Record: 11-7
- ERA: 3.91
- WHIP: 1.242
- Strikeouts: 161
- Innings Pitched: 182.0
The 30-year-old right-hander, once the ace of the Yankees and a two-time All-Star, rebounded in 2024 after injuries derailed much of his career from 2019 to 2021. Severino played a pivotal role in helping the Mets reach the NLCS and is now projected to secure a multi-year contract, with estimates suggesting a deal around three years and $60 million.
As Juan Soto remains Toronto’s primary free-agent target, the organization appears to be simultaneously exploring other opportunities, with Severino emerging as a strong candidate to enhance their starting rotation.
