The MLB world is still reeling from the shocking news that two-time Cy Young winner Blake Snell signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers for five years and $182 million, helping to form what is now the league’s most formidable pitching rotation.

While the Dodgers have been able to spend freely in recent years, there’s a limit to how much they can keep investing. If they are unable to make any more high-profile acquisitions this offseason, the Blue Jays could step in and target a key offensive addition.

Teoscar Hernández, who played for the Blue Jays from 2017 to 2022, is hitting free agency after a stellar season. Although he enjoyed his time with the Dodgers, he may not return if they aren’t willing to meet his financial demands.

Caleb Moody of Just Baseball recently suggested the Blue Jays as a potential landing spot for Hernández, projecting a four-year, $85 million contract.

“Bringing Hernández back would give the Blue Jays a much-needed boost in the outfield, especially after their struggles at the plate in 2024, where they ranked 26th in wRC+ and 28th in OPS,” Moody noted. “Hernández could provide consistent support for Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who was often the only reliable bat in the lineup last season, particularly with questions surrounding Bo Bichette’s offensive performance moving forward.”

Hernández had a career-high 33 home runs in 2024 and earned his second All-Star nod. His best season came in 2021 when he posted an .870 OPS while hitting in the cleanup spot for Toronto, before being traded to the Seattle Mariners the following year.

With Guerrero and Bichette both approaching free agency, the Blue Jays may find themselves in a position where they need to reconsider their past decisions, including potentially undoing the trade that sent Hernández away, and reassemble the most potent offensive core they’ve had in years.
