The Detroit Lions have spent the past two seasons attempting to find a reliable pass-rushing partner for Aidan Hutchinson, but have yet to achieve lasting success with any of their acquisitions.

A new report indicates that the Lions may try again in the upcoming offseason, this time targeting a young edge rusher who is currently enjoying a breakout season. Bleacher Report’s Kris Knox identified New York Giants linebacker Azeez Ojulari as the ideal fit for Detroit.

Though the Lions acquired Za’Darius Smith at the trade deadline and will have him through next season, Knox believes they should focus on a long-term solution, and sees Ojulari as a strong candidate.

“Smith will be 33 at the start of next season, and Detroit should look for a lasting complement to Hutchinson on the edge,” Knox wrote. “With $65 million in cap space projected for 2025, Ojulari could be the perfect target.”

Ojulari had an impressive rookie season in 2021 with eight sacks, but injuries limited his play over the next two years. However, he’s bounced back this season with six sacks and is on track to surpass his career high.

“At just 24 years old, Ojulari is entering his prime,” Knox wrote. “While injuries and a reduced role kept him from the spotlight after his standout 2021 season, he’s proven to be a capable No. 2 edge rusher, especially while filling in for Kayvon Thibodeaux this year.”

Although Smith could provide a solid pass-rushing presence for the Lions while Hutchinson recovers from his leg injury, Ojulari offers potential as a long-term partner alongside Hutchinson, Knox suggests.

“Ojulari and Hutchinson could form a dangerous duo for years to come,” he wrote.

In recent seasons, the Lions have worked to strengthen other areas of their defense, particularly their secondary, which had been one of the league’s worst. However, they’ve struggled to find consistency in the pass rush beyond Hutchinson’s breakout performances.
