The Toronto Blue Jays are set to pursue Juan Soto in free agency, but will need a backup plan in case he signs elsewhere. Fortunately, there are several talented outfielders available.
In a recent article, FanSided’s Zach Pressnell suggested that the Blue Jays should consider signing Jurickson Profar of the San Diego Padres. Pressnell highlighted that Profar had a standout 2024 season, hitting .280/.380/.459 with 24 home runs and even receiving some MVP votes.
Pressnell also pointed out that signing Profar would be a more surprising backup plan for Soto than opting for Teoscar Hernández. Profar, who earned his first career All-Star selection this season, was once the top prospect in baseball back in 2013. He’s projected to sign a two-year, $25 million deal, though that figure could rise if teams view his 2024 performance as a sign of sustained success.
“Profar is expected to secure a significant contract this offseason, but it’s a deal the Blue Jays can afford,” Pressnell wrote. “If Toronto is looking for the most unexpected move after missing out on Soto, they could pivot to Profar, surprising the baseball world while adding a highly talented outfielder.”
Profar played left field in 2024 and could immediately boost the Blue Jays’ power at the plate. Additionally, he offers defensive versatility, having started games at both second base and first base throughout his career. The 31-year-old would provide a valuable offensive upgrade to Toronto’s lineup.
