Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams (9) dives into the end zone to celebrate scoring a touchdown against Jacksonville Jaguars during the second half at Ford Field in Detroit on Sunday, Nov. 17, 2024.

In Week 11, the Detroit Lions put on their most dominant offensive display of the season, crushing the Jacksonville Jaguars 52-6 at Ford Field to advance to 9-1, matching the Kansas City Chiefs for the best record in the league. Five different players scored for the Lions, including wide receiver Jameson Williams, whose touchdown stood out as one of the evening’s key moments.

Early in the third quarter, the 23-year-old Jameson Williams shook off his defender and hauled in a perfect pass from quarterback Jared Goff, then sprinted 64 yards to the end zone for a touchdown. In his celebration, Williams performed a backward dive into the end zone while holding his crotch, a move the NFL classified as obscene. As a result, the league fined him $19,697 for the gesture.

Jameson Williams’ celebration was a tribute to former Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch, who first performed the move after his legendary “Beast Quake” touchdown against the New Orleans Saints in their 2011 Wild Card game. Lynch powered through the entire Saints defense for nearly 70 yards before diving backward into the end zone, extending the ball behind his helmet while holding his crotch.

While Marshawn Lynch wasn’t penalized for his celebration during the playoff game in 2011, he was fined $11,050 for repeating the move in Week 16 of the 2014 season after a career-long 79-yard touchdown run against the Arizona Cardinals, a play famously known as “Beast Quake 2.0.”

Despite his frustration over the fine, Jameson Williams is making strides this season, with explosive plays like his 64-yard touchdown helping to reshape his narrative and position himself for a potential contract extension. The wide receiver, selected 12th overall in the 2022 draft, faced a rocky start to his NFL career, struggling to make a significant impact in his first two years.

Over the 2022 and 2023 seasons, Williams played just 18 games, totaling only 25 receptions for 395 yards and three touchdowns. At one point, he seemed on track to become one of the biggest busts in Lions history, but he has turned things around this year.

In eight games this season, Williams has caught 24 passes for 538 yards and two touchdowns, while also carrying the ball five times for 34 rushing yards. Now, he’s finally showing the talent that made Detroit draft him in 2022. While he still has much to prove, the Lions will be hopeful that he can continue to deliver big plays like his 64-yard touchdown against the Jaguars—though they’ll likely ask him to dial back the celebrations.
