The Toronto Maple Leafs announced today that they have traded defenceman Timothy Liljegren to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for a 2025 third-round draft pick, San Jose’s own 2026 sixth-round pick, and defenceman Matt Benning.
San Jose holds third-round picks previously owned by Edmonton and Colorado, and Toronto will receive the earlier of those two selections as part of the deal.
Benning, 30, has appeared in seven games for the Sharks during the 2024-25 season. A native of Edmonton, AB, he has totaled 102 points (17 goals, 85 assists) over 464 career regular season NHL games with San Jose, Nashville, and Edmonton, along with five assists in 24 playoff games.
The 6’1″, 203-pound defenceman was drafted by Boston in the sixth round (175th overall) of the 2012 NHL Draft.
