The Toronto Blue Jays have decided to part ways with their longtime closer, Jordan Romano.

On Friday, the Blue Jays non-tendered the 31-year-old right-handed pitcher, making him a free agent, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

Romano, a native of Ontario, spent his entire six-year MLB career with the Blue Jays. He earned two All-Star selections in 2022 and 2023, establishing himself as one of the most reliable closers in the league. Over 229.2 innings, he posted a solid career ERA of 2.90, with 285 strikeouts and a WHIP of 1.14. During a standout three-year stretch from 2021 to 2023, Romano had a 2.37 ERA and recorded 95 saves, ranking fourth among all relievers.

However, Romano’s 2024 season was marred by a right elbow injury, which limited him to just 15 games. He struggled with a high 6.59 ERA across 13.2 innings.

While the Blue Jays have opted not to retain Romano at his $7.75 million salary for 2025, the move doesn’t rule out the possibility of him returning to Toronto on a restructured contract.
