Toronto Maple Leafs Linked to Mikael Granlund in Potential Trade Ahead of Deadline
The Toronto Maple Leafs, facing a pressing need at center, are expected to address the position before the trade deadline. NHL analyst Corey Abbott of The Hockey Writers has linked the Maple Leafs to San Jose Sharks forward Mikael Granlund.
“Mikael Granlund has been productive for the offensively-challenged San Jose Sharks since joining the team in 2023-24,” Abbott wrote. “Last season, he led the Sharks with 48 assists and 60 points in 69 games. Through 17 games this season, he’s leading the team in goals (7), assists (11), points (18), power-play points (7), and shots on goal (57).”
The 33-year-old Granlund, who carries a $5 million cap hit and is on the final year of his four-year, $20 million deal, has no trade protection. As a pending UFA, he could be a trade asset for Sharks GM Mike Grier, who might look to send him to a contender.
Toronto already made a trade with San Jose earlier this season, acquiring defenseman Matt Benning along with draft picks in exchange for Timothy Liljegren. Adding Granlund as a third-line center could strengthen Toronto’s depth, while shifting Max Domi to the wing to further balance the lineup.
Granlund’s performance this season—7 goals and 11 assists for 18 points in 17 games—makes him an appealing option for the Maple Leafs as they gear up for a postseason run.
Analyst Stresses Maple Leafs’ Need for Center Depth
Toronto’s depth at center is a critical issue, especially for the playoffs. While Auston Matthews and John Tavares anchor the top two lines, Granlund could bolster the third line, enhancing both scoring and flexibility.
However, the Maple Leafs must navigate salary cap constraints to finalize any deals. Corey Abbott pointed out that Toronto prioritized defense and goaltending during the offseason, but their forward depth remains an area of concern as the postseason approaches.
“With Granlund in the final year of his deal, he’s likely to be available at the trade deadline, especially with the Sharks far from playoff contention,” Abbott added.
Injury Concerns Loom Over the Maple Leafs
Toronto is also managing injuries to key forwards, including Auston Matthews, Max Pacioretty, and Calle Jarnkrok. While Matthews was initially expected to return on November 12, his timeline remains uncertain.
Head coach Craig Berube emphasized the need for other players to step up in their absence. “We definitely have to mix it up a little bit,” Berube said. “We need to find the right fit to replace players of their caliber.”
Toronto’s next challenge comes against the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday, November 16, as they aim to solidify their lineup and address pressing roster concerns.
