Could Juan Soto actually be heading to the Toronto Blue Jays? USA Today’s Bob Nightengale thinks it’s possible and predicts the Blue Jays will secure Soto for a huge price tag. While the New York Yankees and Mets are considered top contenders for Soto, the Blue Jays are making a strong case and plan to meet with the superstar as he evaluates his options.

If Nightengale’s prediction holds, Soto would be looking at a 14-year, $630 million deal with Toronto—a bit less than the Blue Jays were prepared to offer Shohei Ohtani last year before he chose the Los Angeles Dodgers.

“The Blue Jays still have $700 million ready to invest, and if the Yankees refuse to adjust their initial offer, Toronto could step in and sign Soto for $630 million over 14 years,” Nightengale wrote in USA Today’s staff predictions for MLB free agents.

Interestingly, the other writers all forecasted Soto staying with the Yankees.

Soto’s 2024 season with the Yankees was phenomenal, making him an MVP finalist with career highs in home runs (41) and runs scored (128) while hitting .288 with a 178 OPS+. Only Aaron Judge’s performance kept him from securing the MVP title. His contributions also helped the Yankees reach their first World Series since 2009, and his return would make them strong contenders again in 2025.

If Soto joins the Blue Jays, Toronto could become a powerhouse. Currently, the Yankees are favored to win the AL East in 2025, but Soto’s arrival in Toronto might change that. The Blue Jays are in a prime position to aim for their first World Series since 1993, and Soto could be the final piece they need. With one year remaining on contracts for Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette, Soto’s long-term deal could help the team remain competitive even if they face challenges retaining both players in 2026.

This move could also address the “$48 million problem” in right field, where George Springer is signed for two more years at $24 million per season. In 2024, the four-time All-Star struggled, hitting .220 with a .674 OPS, marking a third consecutive year of decline. Soto would bring an immediate upgrade to the right field position for the Blue Jays.
