It might have been exciting for Toronto Blue Jays fans to watch the Los Angeles Dodgers knock out the New York Yankees—the Jays’ longtime division rivals—in the 2024 World Series. However, for fans hoping for a reunion with former star Teoscar Hernández, the celebration may come with some disappointment.
After the Dodgers clinched the series on Wednesday, Hernández, now a highly sought-after free agent, spoke with ESPN Deportes about his offseason plans. He made it clear that his top priority in free agency is returning to the Dodgers, saying he’s willing to do whatever it takes to make it happen. He emphasized that while the decision isn’t entirely his, if he had control, he’d choose the Dodgers.
Teoscar Hernández was asked about returning to the Dodgers on ESPN Deportes following the game last night:
“The Dodgers will be my priority in free agency. I will do whatever is possible to return. It’s not in my hands, but if it were, I’d pick them.” – Blake Harris (@BlakeHHarris) October 31, 2024
Hernández’s outlook makes sense, especially after winning his first World Series title with the Dodgers this year, following unsuccessful playoff runs with the Blue Jays in previous years. It’s understandable he’d want to keep that success going with a team he believes offers the best shot.
For Toronto fans, though, Hernández’s statements could be disappointing. As a former fan favorite, many had hoped his return might reinvigorate the Jays’ offense for 2025 and beyond. Hernández had a standout 2024 season, batting .272 with an .840 OPS, along with 33 home runs, 99 RBIs, and 12 stolen bases across 154 games. In the playoffs, he was a key player, posting a .250 average and .769 OPS, with three home runs and 12 RBIs, showcasing his clutch performance on the big stage—something the Blue Jays have been missing in recent years.
For now, it seems Hernández is leaning toward staying with the Dodgers, meaning a return to Toronto may be unlikely. His words may be a clear sign that, for Blue Jays fans, hopes of a reunion may be fading.
