Formula 1 stars have joined forces in opposition to Max Verstappen after his contentious racing style at the Mexican Grand Prix. The Dutch driver once again showcased his aggressive tactics in Mexico City while battling with Lando Norris in the early laps of the race.
This time, however, the FIA hit him with a 10-second penalty for forcing Norris off-track and imposed an additional 10-second penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage in a different incident.
Verstappen’s championship rival called his racing style “dangerous,” while Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff described his driving as “dirty.”
The Grand Prix Drivers’ Association, headed by Mercedes driver George Russell, reviewed racing guidelines during their drivers’ meeting at the Mexican GP weekend. Russell mentioned that all but one driver supported the stewards in adopting a stricter approach to penalizing such incidents immediately, rather than waiting until 2025 for updated guidelines.
“I think the stewards are fully aligned with what needs to be changed,” Russell told the media at the Mexican GP. “Our perspective is… the main discussion point was that they wanted to hold off until 2025 for consistency through this year. But I’d say 19 out of 20 drivers responded, ‘if it’s wrong, let’s make the change now.'”
“I’m pleased to see those incidents penalized, and I expect that going forward in Brazil, similar actions to what we saw today and last week in Austin won’t be tolerated. You’d think it would be straightforward to make changes if there’s consensus, but it often feels more complicated than necessary with the need for approvals and votes. Still, 19 out of 20 of us are united on the direction we should take.”
Although it’s unclear which driver dissented, the majority were nearly unanimous in rejecting Verstappen’s driving tactics in Austin and Mexico.
