The Blue Jays designated Tim Mayza for assignment in late June after he struggled on the mound, ending his tenure as the longest-serving player on the roster. However, that marked a turning point in his season. In a recent interview, Mayza reflected on his tumultuous year, acknowledging his poor performance in Toronto before being claimed off waivers by the Yankees, which ultimately led to his participation in the World Series.

“I was very aware that my season wasn’t going as planned,” Mayza shared. “If you don’t pitch well, there’s always someone waiting to take your spot. You have to keep improving, or you risk being released—that was just the reality.”

He candidly discussed the ups and downs of his season, expressing gratitude for being in the World Series after his challenges in Toronto. “Looking back at the roller-coaster of the season, I hit some of the lowest points in my baseball career, but now I’m experiencing the highest highs. I’ve felt every emotion and I’m just thrilled to be part of this journey with the Yankees, contributing in any way I can. It’s led me to the World Series—what a wild season. I’m lucky to have landed on my feet.”

Though Mayza isn’t the Yankees’ main closer, he has played a valuable role in their bullpen since joining the team and may get the chance to pitch in the World Series if they can extend the series beyond four games, as they currently trail 2-0.
