A young Toronto Maple Leafs fan is hoping his Halloween costume will land him a meeting with his favorite player, Auston Matthews.
In a video shared on social media over the weekend, Grant Joseph showcased his son Grayson’s creative costume, which features a unique twist. Instead of just dressing as the Leafs captain, Grayson transformed into a trading card of the goal-scoring star.
In the clip, Grayson is seen wearing a Leafs sweater and full hockey gear, surrounded by a cardboard frame designed to resemble an Upper Deck trading card, complete with stats on the back. To top it off, he sports a fake mustache that mimics Matthews’ signature look.
When asked by his dad to show off the costume, Grayson enthusiastically shouts, “Let’s Go!”
While he’s excited to dress as his idol, the young fan dreams of presenting his costume to Matthews in person. “I hope I can show Auston Matthews,” he says in the video. After his dad reassures him that Matthews will likely see it online, Grayson adds, “But I wanna show him in person.”
The clip caught the attention of the official NHL Instagram account, which commented, “Now THIS is a costume! #HockeyHalloween.” On Sunday night, Matthews noticed the post and shared it on his Instagram Reels, adding a flame emoji.
Grant had tagged Matthews in the post and thanked the print shop that helped create the costume, urging fans to assist Grayson in meeting his idol: “You know what to do!! Let’s help Grayson meet @austonmatthews and show off his 1 of 1 hockey card costume!! Big thanks to @envyprintsofficial for helping us bring this to life!!”
For now, Grayson will have to wait to meet Matthews, as the Leafs are in Winnipeg on Monday to face the Jets after an overtime loss to the Bruins. The team’s next home game is on Halloween night this Thursday.
