Breaking News: Trade pitch has Maple Leafs acquiring Star $57 million defenseman in blockbuster

The Toronto Maple Leafs, aiming for a serious Stanley Cup run, could make a blockbuster trade for star defenseman Zach Werenski, as suggested in a fan proposal using PuckPedia’s PuckGM tool.

Proposed Trade Details:

  • To the Maple Leafs: Zach Werenski (with $2.4 million salary retained), Zach Aston-Reese, Kevin LaBanc
  • To the Blue Jackets: Timothy Liljegren, Calle Jarnkrok, David Kämpf, Florida’s 2025 second-round pick, and a 2026 first-round pick.

Werenski, the centerpiece of this deal, is in the third year of a six-year, $57.5 million contract and has already established himself as one of the league’s elite defensemen. Last season, he recorded 11 goals and 46 assists for 57 points in 70 games. Aston-Reese and LaBanc would add depth for Toronto and provide scoring support to their bottom-six forward group.

For Columbus, the deal’s primary return assets are the draft picks and Liljegren, a former first-rounder who could replace Werenski on defense. Kämpf and Jarnkrok would bolster Columbus’s lineup with shutdown play and added offense compared to Aston-Reese and LaBanc.

Maple Leafs Considering Moving Liljegren

Liljegren’s name has surfaced in trade discussions due to his limited role in Toronto. Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman noted that both sides are open to a trade, with Liljegren recently scratched and needing to simplify his game, according to Toronto’s coaching staff.

Werenski’s Strong Start to 2024-25 Season

The 27-year-old Werenski has kicked off the season impressively, tallying seven points in seven games for the Blue Jackets. He attributes his offensive contributions to a team system that emphasizes quick transitions from defense to offense, allowing him to join the play.
