Over the past summer, Toronto Blue Jays star shortstop Bo Bichette was the center of trade rumors, with many believing they were mere speculation and that the team wasn’t genuinely considering moving their superstar.
However, Blue Jays insider Scott Mitchell has confirmed that sources indicate the team did explore trade options for Bichette last winter during the offseason. Mitchell noted that these discussions were likely more exploratory at that time. If the Jays were truly committed to keeping one of their potential franchise cornerstones for the long haul, such discussions probably wouldn’t have been necessary.
Mitchell speculated that the Jays might revisit this possibility this winter for several reasons. “There seems to be a bit of a fractured relationship, and a change of scenery might be beneficial for both parties,” he said.
Bichette had a disappointing 2024 season, posting a .225 batting average with a .598 OPS, along with 29 runs, 4 home runs, and 31 RBIs over 81 games. Injuries throughout the season further hampered his performance.
This lackluster season has left Bichette’s value at a low point, making it challenging for any team to negotiate a successful trade, especially when the player involved is a proven superstar.
Mitchell drew a parallel to Nomar Garciaparra and the Boston Red Sox. In 2002 and 2003, failed contract extension talks led to exploratory trade discussions during the 2003 offseason. Garciaparra’s discovery of these private talks damaged his relationship with the team. After dealing with an Achilles injury in 2004, he was traded at the deadline for a less-than-ideal return. However, he found a fresh start with the Chicago Cubs, while the Red Sox went on to win two World Series titles in four years.
If moving on from a star shortstop can lead to championships, it’s a path worth considering. Nevertheless, the Jays need to carefully evaluate how to address the Bichette situation going forward to ensure a solution that benefits both sides.
