A TSN Hockey Insider has hinted at what Mitch Marner’s next contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs might look like.
As the Maple Leafs prepare to host Igor Shesterkin and the New York Rangers at Scotiabank Arena, aiming to extend their winning streak to four games, discussions around Shesterkin’s pursuit of a record-breaking goalie contract—potentially exceeding $12 million per year—have given insight into Marner’s potential extension. During a TSN 1050 OverDrive segment, Bryan Hayes and Pierre LeBrun touched on the topic, with Hayes suggesting Marner could be quietly seeking an 8-year deal at around $12.5 million per season. LeBrun didn’t rule it out, responding, “I wouldn’t be shocked either.”
LeBrun also humorously noted the idea of Marner earning more than Shesterkin, while acknowledging that such a deal wouldn’t be surprising given the circumstances. While no insider details were revealed, LeBrun explained that the team is monitoring the season’s progression and keeping communication open with Marner’s camp. He highlighted the likelihood of Marner earning more than William Nylander’s $11.5 million per season but less than Auston Matthews’ $13.25 million, making $12.5 million a reasonable estimate.
Though nothing is confirmed until a contract is signed, speculation from top insiders like LeBrun suggests this range is worth considering. The bigger question remains whether Marner will opt for a more lucrative free agency route in 2025 or leave some money on the table to remain with the Leafs, as he’s expressed a desire to stay in Toronto long-term.
