The Toronto Maple Leafs are reportedly showing interest in one of the KHL’s rising stars, despite the potential challenges with cap space to acquire him. According to an exclusive report by Ethan Sears from the *New York Post*, Toronto is one of four NHL teams—along with the Islanders, Nashville Predators, and Utah Hockey Club—expressing early interest in 24-year-old Russian forward Maxim Shabanov.
Shabanov, who plays for Traktor Chelyabinsk, is known for his versatility, being able to play both center and right-wing, as highlighted by *Elite Prospects*. “The Islanders, Maple Leafs, Predators, and Utah have all inquired about Shabanov,” Sears revealed.
Last season in the KHL, Shabanov broke out with 25 goals and 25 assists, totaling 50 points in 64 games. His impressive form continues this season, tallying 17 points in just 14 games. While his growing reputation has attracted NHL interest, Sears reported that no official meetings or scouting trips have occurred yet.
Shabanov’s KHL career totals 51 goals and 49 assists over 156 games. However, standing at 5’8″ and weighing 156 pounds, his size might pose a challenge for making the jump to the NHL. Additionally, at 24 years old, there may be limited room for him to further develop his physical frame.
