Cayden Primeau didn’tff look like an NHL-caliber goalie last night.
To be fair, his teammates didn’t give him much support in the defensive zone.
However, Primeau also allowed some weak goals and should have performed better. While the Habs managed to score four goals, it’s tough to win when the goalie lets in six…
After the game, Tony Marinaro shared his frustration.
Speaking to P.J. Stock, the guest on his podcast, Marinaro admitted he’d seen enough: if it were up to him, he would be done with Cayden Primeau.
I felt that Tony Marinaro’s comments were premeditated.
This was only Primeau’s first game of the season, and he had a more than respectable training camp. He earned his spot to start the season by showing solid performances in both training and the pre-season games he participated in.
I decided to review Cayden Primeau’s recent starts, and one glaring fact stands out: Primeau has only two wins in his last nine games, including matches from last season.
– Loss to the Flames on March 16 (5-2)
– Win against the Kraken on March 24 (5-1)
– Win against the Flyers on March 28 (4-1)
– Loss to the Lightning on April 4 (7-4)
– Loss to the Leafs on April 6 (4-2), after replacing Montembeault
– Loss to the Rangers on April 7 (5-2)
– Loss to the Senators on April 13 (5-4)
– Loss to the Red Wings on April 16 (5-4)
– Loss to the Bruins on October 10 (6-4)
Not only is he struggling to win, but he also allows a lot of goals in his losses, which is a major concern. The defense is young and prone to mistakes, which is understandable, but in such cases, you need a goalie who can help secure victories, and Primeau hasn’t been able to do that recently.
It might be premature to panic, as we’ve seen glimpses of Primeau’s potential, including two shutouts last season. However, if the Canadiens want to be competitive this season, his performance will need to improve.
