Maple Leafs Defenseman Makes Opening Night Roster for the First Time in His Career

Maple Leafs defenseman Simon Benoit is excited to participate in his first-ever season opener, especially with family and friends in attendance in Montreal, though he acknowledges the financial strain that comes with it.

Initially regarded as a depth player, often a 7th defenseman, Benoit made a name for himself in the 2023-24 season with Toronto. His strong defensive performances helped him secure a regular spot in the lineup and earn a contract extension. Now, as a new father, Benoit is gearing up to play in the first season opener of his NHL career, marking a significant milestone.
Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube has confirmed that Simon Benoit, who arrived at training camp in top form, will be part of the opening night lineup. Benoit, eager for the game in his home province of Quebec, expressed his excitement but also joked about the considerable financial hit he’s taking after buying tickets for all his family and friends attending this special occasion.

Benoit is set to begin the season on Toronto’s third defensive pair, alongside right-handed offensive defenseman Conor Timmins. As a stay-at-home defenseman, Benoit is expected to provide the defensive stability needed for Timmins to take more offensive chances.
The pairing of Benoit and Timmins looked strong throughout the pre-season, impressing head coach Craig Berube enough to push Timothy Liljegren down to the fourth pair, below Timmins in the defensive depth chart. With Timmins earning just $1.1M compared to Liljegren’s $3M salary, it has sparked speculation that the Leafs may be considering moving Liljegren to free up cap space. This move could potentially happen before Calle Jarnkrok, Jani Hakanpää, and others are activated from IR/LTIR.
