Ahead of the 120th Red River Rivalry, Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian shared an encouraging update on quarterback Quinn Ewers. This year, the Longhorns are not just aiming for a win; they are seeking revenge.
Ewers has been out for a few weeks due to an oblique strain he sustained against the UTSA Roadrunners. In his absence, backup quarterback Arch Manning has excelled, leading the Horns to a perfect 5-0 record.
However, just days before the highly anticipated (now SEC) matchup, Sarkisian almost guaranteed that Texas’ star quarterback would return to face the Sooners.
Last season, No. 12 Oklahoma shocked No. 3 Texas, which had already defeated top-five Alabama and top-25 Kansas that year. Ewers had a nearly flawless performance in that loss, aside from an interception on Texas’ first drive.
This year, Texas holds the No. 1 spot in the nation, while Oklahoma is ranked No. 18 as the teams prepare for the rivalry. The Longhorns have had a perfect start to the season, whereas the Sooners have only stumbled against then-No. 6 Tennessee.
“Quinn worked with us during our three practices last week,” Sarkisian stated on Monday. “He practiced again today, and I thought he looked good coming off the bye. If anyone benefited from the time off, it was probably him.”
Ewers missed the second half of the game against the Roadrunners in Week 3 and sat out Texas’ Week 4 matchup against the UL Monroe Warhawks and their Week 5 game (the SEC opener) against the Mississippi State Bulldogs.
