Former Maple Leafs defenseman Travis Dermott has signed a contract with the Edmonton Oilers. In Edmonton, the organization is singularly focused on returning to the Stanley Cup Finals and securing a win. Over the summer, management spared no effort in equipping the team, bringing in key players like Jeff Skinner, Victor Arvidsson, and Matthew Savoie to strengthen the roster.
However, the Oilers made fewer adjustments on defense. With Evan Bouchard’s contract nearing its end and Darnell Nurse’s long-term deal worth $9.25 million AAV, the team sought affordable options to bolster their depth. This led to the decision to sign Dermott to a professional tryout during training camp.
In breaking news, Travis Dermott’s professional tryout paid off, as he and the Oilers have agreed to a one-year contract worth $775k.
Dermott, 27, has appeared in 329 NHL games during his career with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Vancouver Canucks, and Arizona Coyotes. Drafted by the Leafs in 2015, 34th overall, the defenseman tallied seven points, including two goals, last season with the Coyotes.
This signing is a smart move for Edmonton, securing a dependable and mobile defenseman capable of playing both sides of the ice. However, the Oilers will be hoping Dermott elevates his game during the season.
Not all PTOs worked out, as forward Mike Hoffman was released despite an impressive preseason.
With stars like Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, and Evan Bouchard leading the team, it will be interesting to watch Dermott, alongside former Leafs teammate Zach Hyman, as they aim to make a strong impact this season.
