Amid the growing speculation about Mitch Marner’s future with the Toronto Maple Leafs, general manager Brad Treliving addressed the situation surrounding the star forward. Speaking on the “Spittin’ Chiclets” podcast on Wednesday, Treliving defended Marner, dismissing much of the criticism the winger has faced as “undue.”
Treliving was asked about Marner’s offseason, the ongoing trade rumors, and the criticism of his playoff performances. He quickly downplayed the negativity directed at Marner. “I think Mitch took a lot of heat, and unduly so,” Treliving said. “When you’re one of the top guys, high expectations come with the territory, but it’s important to remember the whole team could have done better in recent years.”
The GM emphasized that while expectations for players like Marner are understandably high, it’s the entire team that needs to step up. “We are fortunate to have Mitch. He’s a star. Sure, we want more from everyone, but it’s unfair to single him out,” Treliving said. “Our goaltending, our defense—there are a lot of areas we can improve to help those guys succeed.”
Treliving also noted Marner’s dedication during the offseason, predicting a strong upcoming year. “He was really focused this summer—he’s got that energy and swagger back. I’m expecting a big season from Mitch,” Treliving added.
Marner is set to enter the final year of his six-year, $65.4 million contract and will become a free agent in July 2025.
