The Maple Leafs made significant roster cuts in the final week of training camp, placing one player on waivers and cutting 20 others as the regular season approaches. On Thursday, 21 players were assigned to the Toronto Marlies after one of the team’s final training camp sessions.
Among the moves, Nick Abruzzese was placed on waivers to be reassigned to the Marlies. Despite his solid performance with the Marlies over the past two seasons, he wasn’t seriously in contention for a roster spot during this camp.
Additionally, the Leafs sent down forwards Marc Barbolini, James Frasca, Matthew Gosselin, Braeden Kressler, Brandon Lisowsky, Robert Mastrosimone, Max Sikic, Zach Solow, Sam Stevens, and Ty Voit. On defense, William Villeneuve’s reassignment to the Marlies came after he didn’t appear in a pre-season game. Joining him were defensemen Max Anderson, Julius Bengtsson, Ryan McCleary, Tyrell Miller, Rhett Parsons, and Connor Sharpe. Goalies Jon Gillies, Vyacheslav Peksa, and Dennis Hildeby were also sent down.
The Leafs released their lineup for Thursday’s game, which features several prominent Marlies players who appear to have one last chance to make the Leafs’ opening night roster. With the first cuts made and Marlies training camp starting, more cuts could follow after the game.
