Novak Djokovic stated that Jannik Sinner’s doping case is harmful to tennis, making this assertion just minutes before Sinner’s loss to Carlos Alcaraz at the China Open. Sinner, who recently won the US Open, had tested positive for an anabolic steroid in March. However, an independent tribunal found him blameless and did not impose any punishment.

The tribunal accepted Sinner’s explanation that the banned substance entered his system due to a massage from his physio, who had used a spray containing the steroid to treat a cut on their finger. Nonetheless, the threat of a suspension has resurfaced since the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) filed an appeal against the tribunal’s ruling of “no fault or negligence.”

WADA has approached the Court of Arbitration for Sport, seeking a ban of up to two years for the 23-year-old. The appeal was submitted last Thursday but was only made public on Saturday morning, coinciding with Sinner’s match at the China Open.

The world No. 1 reached the final in Beijing on Wednesday, only to have his 15-match winning streak ended by Alcaraz in a thrilling three-set match. Meanwhile, Djokovic was addressing the media at the Shanghai Masters.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion criticized the handling of the Sinner case, pointing out the “too many inconsistencies” and “too many governing bodies” involved. When asked about WADA’s recent intervention, Djokovic remarked, “It’s clear that our system isn’t functioning effectively. This is something even those who don’t closely follow our sport can recognize.

“There are too many inconsistencies and governing bodies involved. This entire situation is not benefiting our sport at all.”
