Jos Verstappen, Max Verstappen’s father, has made headlines with a revealing new interview, casting uncertainty over his son’s future at Red Bull. Max has been with the Red Bull organization throughout his entire Formula 1 career, starting in their junior program before joining Toro Rosso (now AlphaTauri) in 2015. In less than a year, he was promoted to the main Red Bull team, replacing Daniil Kvyat, who was demoted.Up until this year, the three-time world champion seemed set to finish his career with Red Bull, especially after signing a new six-year contract in 2022.However, doubts about Verstappen’s future arose at the start of the 2024 season when he suggested he might leave Red Bull if team advisor Helmut Marko were dismissed due to allegations of protocol violations during the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix weekend. Marko, who works for Red Bull’s parent company rather than the racing team itself, was ultimately cleared of any wrongdoing.According to Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff, members of Verstappen’s camp had discussions with Mercedes about a potential move for 2025. However, no deal was reached, and Mercedes went on to sign Kimi Antonelli as a replacement for Lewis Hamilton, who is set to join Ferrari. Both Antonelli’s and George Russell’s contracts are set to expire at the end of 2025, likely reigniting the conversation about Verstappen’s potential move to the team. Adding to the complexity is Verstappen’s father, Jos, who has had a strained relationship with Red Bull team boss Christian Horner and has become increasingly critical of the team during their recent dip in performance. In a recent interview with Motorsport.com, Jos Verstappen voiced concerns over Red Bull’s current form and the departure of several key staff members, including technical chief Adrian Newey, sporting director Jonathan Wheatley, and head of race strategy Will Courteney. He stated, “Yes, this is what I warned about. The team says, ‘Oh, it doesn’t matter, we have someone else.’ But now it’s too many people [leaving]. Max is constantly asked about it, and so on. So yeah, it’s just not good, what’s happening at the moment. And [Horner] always glosses over it.”In June, after further accusations from Jos Verstappen that Christian Horner had prevented him from participating in a legends event—claims Horner denied—the Red Bull team principal clarified that the disagreement had no impact on Max. Horner stated, “The relationship with Max has always been very good and strong. He’s our driver. He’s the one who is important to have a strong relationship with.”
