The Toronto Maple Leafs are deep into their training camp as they prepare for the upcoming season, but the team is also busy on the trade front. Forward Nick Robertson and defenseman Connor Timmins are reportedly potential trade candidates before the season starts in October, according to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period. Speaking on NHL Network, Pagnotta mentioned that the Leafs are exploring trade options for both players due to their tight salary cap situation, currently over the limit by $1.7 million, and a full 23-player roster, with additional signings like veteran Max Pacioretty still pending.
“They don’t have much cap room,” Pagnotta noted. “They’re trying to free up cap and roster space.” While sending Timmins to the minors could provide relief, Leafs GM Brad Treliving is reportedly aiming for longer-term solutions via trades.
Pagnotta’s report aligns with a previous update from insider Frank Seravalli, who suggested that despite Nick Robertson’s new one-year contract, he remains more likely to be traded than to start the season with the Leafs. “There’s still strong interest in Robertson, and it’s easier to trade a player with a contract rather than an RFA,” Seravalli wrote.
Addressing the rumors, Robertson said during media availability, “I signed in Toronto, and I’m happy to be here. It’s been great to see everyone.” How long that lasts remains to be seen.
