In a strategic maneuver just ahead of training camp, the Toronto Maple Leafs have officially signed five new players to their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Toronto Marlies. Announced on September 11, these signings are designed to inject a blend of veteran experience and youthful talent into the Marlies’ lineup. While none of these players are expected to join the NHL squad unless an emergency arises, their performances in the AHL could pave the way for future opportunities in the major leagues.

Here’s a closer look at the new additions:

  1. Robert Mastrosimone – At just 23 years old, Mastrosimone stands out as one of the most intriguing signings. After a promising season with the Marlies last year, recording 15 points in 25 games, Mastrosimone could be on the cusp of an NHL call-up if he continues his strong performance.
  2. Joseph Blandisi – Aged 30, Blandisi brings a wealth of experience to the Marlies. A veteran forward who has been a mainstay in the Marlies’ lineup for the past three seasons, he even served as an alternate captain last year. His leadership and consistency will be invaluable to the team.
  3. Zach Solow – A gritty, 26-year-old forward, Solow had a notable season in 2023 with the Marlies, scoring 26 points and accumulating 132 penalty minutes over 66 games. His physical style and scoring ability could make him a candidate for a future NHL role.
  4. Matteo Pietroniro – At 25 years old, Pietroniro is a defenseman with international experience, having played in both Finland and Italy. His diverse background and defensive skills will add depth to the Marlies’ blue line.
  5. Ryan McCleary – The youngest of the group at 21, McCleary is another defenseman eager to make his mark. Drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2021 but not yet signed, McCleary had a strong season with the Swift Current Broncos, notching 36 points in 56 games. The Maple Leafs could be the organization to offer him an entry-level deal and an opportunity to advance his career.

While these players are currently focused on contributing to the Marlies, the unpredictability of injuries and other roster changes in the NHL could open doors for them in the future. The Maple Leafs’ investment in these players highlights their commitment to building a deep, competitive pipeline.
