Exclusive Report: Maple Leafs and Red Wings Locked in Intense Showdown for $52M Star.

The Anaheim Ducks are still in the early stages of their rebuild and may look to trade some of their veteran players in the coming weeks and months, including standout defenseman Cam Fowler. According to Eric Stephens of The Athletic, the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Detroit Red Wings are the two most likely destinations for Fowler if Anaheim decides to make him available. “Detroit stands out because Fowler grew up in suburban Farmington Hills and spends summers there,” Stephens explained. “Toronto, always striving to improve its defense, is constantly battling the salary cap and looking to push past its playoff struggles.” Stephens also mentioned Dallas and Winnipeg as potential trade partners, though Winnipeg had a solid defense last season and Dallas would likely require Fowler to take on a lesser role. Fowler, who has two years remaining on his eight-year, $52 million contract with a $6.5 million cap hit, could be an attractive option for both teams. This isn’t just speculation, as Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reported earlier this month that Fowler and the Ducks are in a “positive working environment” as they explore trade options. “From what I’ve heard, Fowler is open to talking to more teams outside of his 28-team no-trade list,” Friedman reported on September 6. “He has a lot of respect across the league, and there will be interest.” Fowler’s contract includes a four-team trade list, but Stephens confirmed that Fowler has expanded this list to more than 10 teams, increasing the likelihood of a deal. “Fowler has added more teams to his list, giving him a wider range of trade possibilities,” Stephens noted. He also suggested that although such trades are rare right before the season, moving Fowler now could benefit both sides, possibly leading to a trade before the end of September so he can participate in training camp and the preseason with his new team.
